Exploring Idaho's Highest Desert
Published in Paperback by Challenge Expedition Co (June, 1988)
Average review score:

Excellent for the Sagebrush Steppe Hiker.Sheldon Bluestein gives excellent advice for desert hiking. He gives reminders on the essentials for experienced desert hikers and good advice for beginners. The directions to the hikes are precise. The difficulty levels though, are a lot tougher in the heat of summer than he lets on, and the hikes seem twice as long due to terrain. Most of the trips are day hikes and they are graded by difficulty and length. There are lots of black and white photos, maps, and descriptions of what you will encounter on the hikes. He also names which BLM or USGS maps you will need, as well as what seasons are best to visit, and PLSS locations. As someone new to desert hiking in Idaho, I had no problems finding the trails, dirt roads, and landmarks. I enjoyed it so much, I now live in Idaho's back country and hike in the desert every chance I get.

Best guidebook on mtn biking I've ever read!By far and away the best mountain bike guidebook I've ever read, not just for Idaho, but for anywhere! The author does a great job of explaining local trailheads, has incredible maps and is just a great, fun read for either at home or on the road. Just buy this book, you'll be psyched you did!

Governor Smylie Remembers
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Idaho Pr (May, 1998)
Average review score:

Great read for a political profile of Idaho.Smylie represents a down to earth cross section of the good ole boy football playing mentality of the local politics. The Power, Lumber and Mining interests that really control the state allow folks like Andrus to do as they please as long as they don't get in the way. It will be very interesting to see how he contrasts with Cosmopolitian Dirk Kempthorne over the next term. Definitely a read for anyone interested in Idaho Politics.

Great Trails for Family Hiking: The Tetons
Published in Paperback by Pruett Publishing Co. (June, 1995)
Average review score:

An on the money, great family plannerThis book was the most well used and helpful of the several that we took along on our Teton vacation. It was absolutely exact in everything from its trail descriptions, to which forks to take for what results, to whether or not insects would bother us on a particular hike. We used it daily to plan our upcoming adventures. I appreciate having a hiking book geared toward young families, and this one surely enabled us to enjoy many great and unforgetable hiking experiences with our 3 children. I love the off the beaten path and hidden places that the author so expertly describes. Many times we felt that we were the only people in the park.

Haven in the Wilderness : The Story of Frances Zaunmiller Wisner of Campbell's Ferry, Idaho
Published in Unknown Binding by Never Summer Publications ()
Average review score:

A fascinating story about one woman's lifeThis book had personal meaning for me as it is the story of my great aunt. Growing up I had always heard about my family's trips to Idaho to see Frances. I laid in bed as a child as my grandfather told me stories about hunting bear with Frances and the great times they had. My eyes were filled with wonderment, much as they were after I read this book. It is a true story and I'm proud to say that she was a relative of mine. To read all of the different tales I had heard growing up put together in one book was great. I have lent my autographed copy to many people and all have enjoyed it as much as I did. It truly is a wonderful story.
